EaViL formed their permanent collaboration in late 2002.
Chicago brought together two sides of the world
geographically and psychically. EaViL is a duo consisting of n.
VI and E.IV. E creates vocals, lyrics and abstract noises. n
creates projections and visuals as well as composing the
music. Historical and psychological themes both personal and
universal dominate their music. Their audio / visual
performances are best suited for galleries and small spaces.
Early avant-garde and experimental shorts, the sky,
architecture and squirrels are immense sources of
inspiration. Paradox is a prominent variable. This is evident
in the use of noise and melody, “dark” and “light” themes
and conflicting moods. Their first output was a series of wildly
varied compilations. These conceptual CDs incorporated their
favorite artists and influences. This eventually led to an
interest in VJ/DJ sets of obscure music and videos.
Collaborations with Miss Julie Fabulous provided experience
with many different aspects of filmmaking. Creating music
began with them performing live as part of The Electric Set.
They have participated in the Version 06 and Select Media 05
Festivals. They have performed on Chic-A-Go-Go and venues
throughout the city including: Nihilist, Peter Jones Gallery,
Empty Bottle, Enemy and Heaven Gallery. EaViL have self
released two EPS: Le Miroir and Phantasmic Seam under
their NERV imprint. A full length album is set for release in
the near future.
The Nerv is a small (a)venue on a side street overlooking
McKinley Park. Inside is a network where stimuli are created
for all five senses. These include: photo shoots, VJ/DJ sets,
artwork displays, various film “screenings,” dinners, live
music performance and more. All will be presented under
various identities for different purposes. The heart of the
operation includes: THE EYE and THE MOUTH. These two
places focus on expression that will require you to make
extensive use of the nerves that link them to the brain to
experience the work produced. Also gaining momentum is
THE EAR, where audio pieces are being created. They all
connect to form an entire body of work. Nerv is a very
intimate space where friends are occasionally invited to share
in this process. There are generally between 5 and 10
people present for an event. Some works may require input
or suggestions and others will be the final reveal.We are not
limited to our own personal work and welcome friends to
share what they have created.
They look good, dress good, live well, eat, drink, love,
breathe, dance, sing and cry well. Four hands, eyes and ears.
Mouths made for lollipops and kisses with metal for good
measure. Together, a couple hundred pounds of affection.
They’ve been there already. Barely in their twenties, they look
younger. That look… like Blue Velvet, like Daughters of
Darkness. The power to exalt or to destroy. Wanting only the
former, but unafraid to invoke the latter if the time comes.
The eye sees through, knows more, and looks longer. The
mouth screams, chants and speaks, sometimes inaudibly.
On their own in a wondrous-wicked-woundup-wasted-wild-
worried-wisedup-warmbodied world. Their words tells as much
as their sounds. No faked up grandeur, EaViL is like it is: a
little strange, a little mysterious, and a lot original.
No one is born sophisticated. It’s a place you have to crawl to.
They’ve crawled out of hayseed country, over miles of
unsanded pavement. Past trouble, past corners and forks
with no signs to point you, till you get there and you wake up
wiser. They’ve arrived. They deal with the long crawl and
make you have to listen.
